Interpret Property Definitions

The Property Definitions dialog appears when a System Owner chooses to edit or create a Property Definition for an object from the Object Definitions dialog. The Property Definitions dialog consists of three tabs: General Information, Display Information, and Validation—the options in these tabs are used to define the object's properties.

Note: The Validation tab is not found in every type of property, and its options are unique for certain properties.

General Information

The General Information tab consists of a number of options. The Type and Column Name are only editable when creating a new object property; otherwise, they are grayed out. The Inline edit, Use Editor, and Use Browser options are displayed only for Text and Multi-language Text types.

Type: This dropdown menu consists of ten object property types: Text, Multi-Language Text, Integer Number, Decimal Number, Boolean, Date/Time, Image, Selection Box, Rich Text, and Multi-Language Rich Text. Visit Interpret Object Property Types page to learn more.

Column Name: The name of the column that is created in the database where the property values are stored. The column name is set when the custom property is first defined; it cannot be modified afterward.

Enable Property: Enables or disables the property.

Allow Advanced Searching: Allows property to be included/excluded in searches. (Only enabled when the Enable Property box is selected.)

Enable for Report Filtering and Display: Allows property to be included/excluded in reports that allow data filtering on a property value or display of a property value. (Only enabled when the Enable Property box is selected.)

Inline Edit: Allows property to be edited within the property line.

Use Editor: Allows property to be edited in a popup editor window.

Use Browser: Allows employees to browse locally for the property value. When this option is enabled, the URL property, for example, displays an ellipsis button. When clicked, the employee can selected any file they want to link to from a standard windows file browse dialog. This path will then appear in the property line, as shown in the image below:

Note: A file path local to the system your competency intelligence client is running on will be inaccessible to clients running on a different system. The browse dialog would typically be used to set a file path to a mapped network drive or UNC file path that is accessible to all systems the CI client might be run from

Default Value: The value that appears in the property line by default. This can be set for different languages.

Display Information

The Display Information tab is where you define the Property Name and Description in the fields under the designated languages that are installed in your Competency Intelligence application. This dialog may need to be resized to view all available languages.

Validation

The Validation tab is used to configure the validation rules for the property. For example, you may want to define a password as containing a minimum of five characters and at least one number.

Note: For some properties, you will not see this tab, and options in this screen vary for certain properties and look different than in the screenshot below.
